Applicant Information for Receipts/Permits


1. Applicants agree to comply with all Federal, State and/or City of Canton Ordinances/ Codes to erect or modify any structure according to the plans/specifications approved by the Chief Building Official. All work must be completed within one year (unless an extension of time is granted for just cause). Permit is revocable at any time if conditions are violated.

2.Building permit holder is responsible to contact the Department for the following inspections: (1) Prior to pouring footers, (2) Prior to backfilling a foundation, (3) Rough inspection before walls are covered, (4) Final completion before occupancy.

3. Zoning and all permits are issued based on the information submitted by applicant. The work allowed by a permit must commence within one year of the date of issuance. All work is to be done according to the City of Canton codes. Any other permits that would be needed are the responsibility of the applicant.

4. All permit holders are responsible for contacting the appropriate inspector for all required inspections during office hours of 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. Building 430-7800 Plumbing 430-7809 Electric 430-7812 HVAC 430-7815 Zoning 430-7817 Demolition 430-7800 Fire 430-7800 Code Enforcement 430-7819.

5. Applicant is responsible to verify that the job location is in the City Limits of Canton or on the City of Canton water supply. If the job location is out of the city Limits or not on the City water supply, NO REFUND WILL BE ISSUED. THERE IS NO REFUND FOR ANY PERMIT RECEIVED BY THIS DEPARTMENT.

6. Applicants for Home Improvement, Demolition, HVAC, Plumbing, Electric, and Fire Permits are responsible for maintaining a current license with the City of Canton and State Fire Marshall. Permits will be voided with no refund if found in violation.

7. Applicant is responsible for notifying appropriate utility companies to identify any/all underground utilities before start of construction. City of Canton is not responsible for any such inspections or verification of underground utilities. Owner is responsible for verifying property line location prior to construction.

8. City of Canton is not responsible for verification of "owner of record" when making applications for permits/receipts.

9. Applications for plan approvals will not be accepted without a plan approval form filled out in full.

10. There will be no refunds for any permit, receipt, or monies received by Building Inspection/Code Enforcement/Zoning Departments.

12. Effective June 18, 1987, a $10.00 service charge will be levied against the maker of any returned check made payable to any Canton City Department. Contractors are not permitted to have homeowners obtain permits for work they are performing. A “homeowner’s permit” is for the bonafide owner of a property in which he resides, to obtain a permit for work he will personally be installing/doing, for which he takes full responsibility and liability. If he hires a non-licensed or licensed contractor to do work for which he has obtained a permit, both parties are in violation of City Ordinance and are subject to penalties.

14. Permits are to be obtained before the commencement of work. Any contractor who fails to obtain permits shall be required to obtain and pay for the permits which were originally required and shall pay a penalty twice the amount of the original permit fees (Canton Codified Ordinance 1303.05 (d)).

15. In addition to cash, checks and money orders Visa and Master Card are accepted. We do not accept large bills in currency. There are no refunds for permits. Effective June 18, 1987, a $10.00 service charge will be levied against the maker of any returned check made payable to any Canton City Department.

16. All applications/permit applications must be completed. Make sure that the address where the work is being done is correct with the correct number, street name and direction. If the address is not correct, a new permit for the correct address must be obtained with a new fee.

17. Only the contractor licensed by the City of Canton Building Department may sign and obtain building permits for 1-, 2- and 3-family homes. All contractors for Plumbing, Electric, HVAC, and Demolition must be licensed by the City of Canton Building Department for all commercial and 1-, 2- and 3-family homes.

18. All permit application cards, drawing revisions and correction letters must be submitted at the counter or mail for processing. No fax copies will be accepted.
