NEW LICENSING

New applicants may apply at any time throughout the year. However fees will not be prorated. We accept new applicants for the calendar year starting February 1st.

The information provided below is only to simplify the language, procedure, and requirements to obtain your license and/or registration. Exact reference may be obtained from the Codified Ordinances of the City of Canton:

TO SCHEDULE YOUR INTERVIEWS, CALL (330)430-7800 BETWEEN 8:00 A.M. AND 4:15 P.M.

ONCE LICENSE IS ISSUED, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SURE YOUR INFORMATION IS CURRENT IN THIS OFFICE BY SENDING US YOUR MOST RECENT REQUIREMENTS. PERMITS MAY BE DENIED IF YOUR LICENSING INFORMATION IS NOT UP-TO-DATE.

TO BECOME A LICENSED HOME IMPROVEMENT CONTRACTOR/SALESMAN:

1. A copy of your driver's license with your picture.

2. A properly executed bond on the City of Canton's bond form for the amount of $10,000 with the ending date of February 28 and signed on the principal line by the same person as the certificate holder. This bond form is to be taken to an insurance or bonding company of your choice.

3. Company letterhead paper with the name, company name, address, city, state, zip code and telephone number of the certificate holder or the same printed on plain paper.

4. FOR A CONTRACTOR: A fee of $225 on one check made out to the City of Canton ($150 for the license fee and $75 for the application fee).

For a SALESMAN: A fee of $110 on one check made out to the City of Canton($75 for the application fee and $35 for the license fee).

5. Proof of Worker's Compensation even if you are self-employed.

6. Application form must be completed and notarized.

7. A Business & Corporation Information Sheet from the City of Canton Income Tax Department must be completed and signed on the back.

8. After all requirements are collected, then call and schedule an appointment with the Chief Building Official for Wednesday or Friday. Call 430-7800 for an appointment.

TO BECOME A REGISTERED PLUMBING, ELECTRIC, OR HVAC CONTRACTOR:

1. A copy of your driver's license with your picture.

2. A copy of your up-to-date State Department of Commerce Contractor License ONLY, which includes your State ID Number, Name and Address, Type of Contractor, Certification Expiration Date and Position.

3. A properly executed bond on the City of Canton's bond form for the amount of $10,000 with the ending date of February 28 and signed on the principal line by the same person as the certificate holder. This bond form is to be taken to an insurance or bonding company of your choice.

4. A fee of $225 (Two separate checks made out to the City of Canton for $150 for the license fee and $75 for the application fee).

5. Company letterhead paper with the name, company name, address, city, state, zip code and telephone number of the certificate holder or the same printed on plain paper.

6. Proof of Worker's Compensation even if you are self-employed.

7. Application form completed and notarized.

8. A Business & Corporation Information Sheet from the City of Canton Income Tax Department must be completed and signed on the back.

9. After all requirements are submitted, approval must be given by the Chief Building Official (No interview is required).

10. Our department can send you a copy of the ordinance for the license in which you are requesting information.

TO BECOME A REGISTERED PLUMBING OR ELECTRIC JOURNEYMAN:

1. An application must be completely filled out and notarized.

2. A Resident Information Sheet from the City of Canton Income Tax Department must be completed and signed on the back.

3. A fee of $35 ($20 is for the application fee and $15 is for the license fee). The checks should be made payable to the City of Canton.

4. A copy of your drivers license with photo

5. Proof of exam passed through our Civil Service Department OR the applicant presents a current, valid, State of Ohio electrical Contractor's License or Plumbing Contractor's License (as appropriate) obtained through an examination.

6. Name, address, city, state, zip code and telephone number of your current employer.

RECIPROCITY: Any political subdivision within Stark County, Ohio

  • a. An application must be completely filled out and notarized.
  • A Resident Information Sheet from the City of Canton Income Tax Department must be completed and signed on the back.
  • b. A fee of $35 ($20 is for the application fee and $15 is for the license fee). The checks should be made payable to the City of Canton.
  • c. A current journeyman license issued by a political subdivision within Stark County (To date, only Massillon and North Canton are reciprocal) OR the applicant presents a current, valid, State of Ohio Electrical Contractor's License or Plumbing Contractor's License (as appropriate), obtain through an examination. Exception: Massillon Plumbing Journeymen are not reciprocal with the City of Canton.
  • A copy of your drivers license
  • d. Name, address, city, state, zip code and telephone number of your current employer. Building Official. (No interview required.)

HOW TO BECOME A REGISTERED PLUMBING OR ELECTRIC APPRENTICE:

1. An application form must be completed and notarized.

2. A Resident Information Sheet from the City of Canton Income Tax Department must be completed and signed on the back.

3. A copy of your driver's license with your picture.

4. The applicant shall submit appropriate proof and documentation that the applicant presently is engaged in learning the plumbing/electrical trade by being indentured in a training program registered with and approved by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training and that the applicant is presently learning and being instructed in the plumbing/electrical trade by working under the direct supervision of a/an plumbing/electrical contractor or journeyman plumbing/electrician.

5. A $20 license fee ($10 application fee and $10 license fee--one check made out to the City of Canton).

6. No interview required. No approval by the Chief Building Official.

DEMOLITION CONTRACTOR

To become a licensed demolition contractor with the City of Canton, the following requirements must be received in proper form:

1319.03 LICENSE AND BOND REQUIREMENTS

  • (a) Application form completed and notarized. A Business & Corporation Information Sheet from the City of Canton Income Tax Department must be completed and signed on the back.
  • (b) Surety bond on city form for $10,000 or continuation certificate based on first city bond form originally submitted.
  • Insurance for personal liability for $250,000. Insurance for property damage liability for $50,000. (Need Certificate of Insurance from insured's insurance company)
  • (c) Insurance for personal liability for $250,000.
  • (d) Annual fee for $150 renewable on or before February 28 of each year. (A $75 late fee shall be assessed for licensing renewals - effective February 28th of each year.)
  • (e) Up-to-date Worker's Compensation.
  • (f) Furnish a statement indicating the locations or places where all demolition materials will be disposed of and documentary proof that such disposal site or sites are approved by the appropriate state and/or local authorities for the disposal of demolition materials. If in Stark County, provide a copy of their demolition materials disposal site or transfer site permit from the Stark County Board of Health.

Renewal of a demolition contractor requires all of the above except (a).

The Chief Building Official must approve the person/company requesting a license.
