The City of Canton uses the current edition of the State of Ohio Plumbing Code as set forth in Chapter 4101:2-51, of the Ohio Administrative Code, for residential and commercial structures.

"Permits shall be required for the installation, repair, and replacement of all plumbing work done in the City, or for plumbing work connected to the City's municipal water supply and/or sanitary sewer system beyond the City's corporation line ..." (Chapter 1315 of the City of Canton Codified Ordinances) including, but NOT all inclusive, fixtures or traps, waste piping, water piping, gas outlets, water heaters, food grinder, disposal or dishwasher, water service, water main distributing systems, and inspections.

All contractors performing plumbing work in the City of Canton and all journeymen and trainee/apprentices must also be licensed.

The basics to get an plumbing permit, you must have with you:

1. The correct address where the work is being done.

2. The contractor's name, address, telephone.

3. The owner's name, address, telephone.

4. Know the work you will be performing

5. The fee for the permit.

6. If you are not the bonafide home owner living on the premises, you must be a licensed contractor.

7. If you are a commercial contractor doing commercial work, plans must first be approved before a permit can be obtained.

8. Along with the correct address, if the address is in a new allotment or on a new street, the location of the street where the work is being performed, must be clearly described under "Remarks" on the back of the permit application and the address on the street clearly marked.
