Overview

The City of Canton Building Department/Code Enforcement/Zoning is located at 424 Market Avenue North, Third Floor, Canton, Ohio 44702-1544. The building is known as the “Old Sears” building in Downtown Canton on the east side between 4th and 5th Streets N.E. (The same building that the Health Department occupies).

Our office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Inspector office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 to 4:15 p.m.

The City of Canton Building Department is responsible for structures in the City Corporation Limits-- building, zoning, fire, demolition, plumbing, electric, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning permits within the city corporation limits and plumbing permits on the Canton City water lines. The City of Canton Code Enforcement is responsible for registering and inspecting non-owner occupied housing, vacant structures, and exterior owner-occupied structures.

The Building Department for the City Corporation Limits of Canton, Ohio consists of seven divisions which include Plans Review, Building, Zoning, Plumbing, Electric, Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning, and Code Enforcement (non-owner occupied, exterior-occupied, vacant housing enforcement).

CERTIFIED DEPARTMENT (4101:2-1-44) The City of Canton Building Department is a Certified Municipal Building Department meeting all requirements of the Board of Building Standards pursuant to Section 3781.l0 of the revised code.

ENFORCEMENT (4101:2-1-16) The Chief Building Official shall enforce all the provisions of the Ohio Basic Building Code relating to construction, arrangement, and erection of all buildings or parts thereof as defined in the Code per 4101:2-1-16 and the Canton City Codified Ordinance 1301.02.
