Parking in Downtown Canton

tndowntown.jpg - 7305 BytesAs evidenced in the photograph to the left, downtown Canton was not constructed with the automobile in mind. Mass production of the automobile chased away horse-driven buggies and trolly cars, and created a lack of parking spaces.

By virtue of Canton being the county seat of Stark County, courts and government offices attract a substantial influx of traffic daily.

Five parking decks located in the immediate downtown area offer approximately 3,000 parking spaces in addition to 700 metered spaces, several surface lots, and free parking on some streets that perimeter the downtown area. Map of Downtown Parking

  • Parking tickets may be paid:

  • Contesting a Parking Violation:

    Parking Meters:

There are approximately 700 parking meters in downtown Canton. Time allotment includes 30 minute, 1 hour, 2 hour, and 10 hour meters.

Parking meters only accept U.S. coins, they do not give change, and they do not store time e.g. one hour parking at a one hour meter costs 20 cents. Depositing extra coins will not prolong the time. The meter will expire after one hour.

All metered parking spaces have white lines on the street representing the parking zone for each meter. Persons parking outside of a Marked Meter Zone are in violation of a parking ordinance and subject to receive a parking violation.

If you have experienced a problem with a parking meter and believe it to be operating incorrectly, you may submit a Parking Meter Problem Report.

    Did You Know That...

Chapter 303 of the Codified Ordinances of the City of Canton states that a vehicle may be towed and impounded:

"when any vehicle is found for which three or more citation tags for violations of this Traffic Code have been issued and the owner or operator thereof has failed to respond to such citation tags as lawfully required"

In addition to other traffic violations, three (3) unpaid parking tickets will put a vehicle on the tow list.
